CSA Wellington Co-operative Limited is a Community Supported Agriculture scheme (CSA) in Wellington and Palmerston North, New Zealand.
A CSA is a partnership of mutual commitment between a farm and a community of supporters which provides a direct link between the production and consumption of food…. Members make a commitment to support the farm throughout the season, and assume the costs, risks and bounty of growing food along with the farmer or grower. Consumer members help pay for seeds, fertilizer, water, equipment maintenance, labor, etc. In return, the farm provides, to the best of its ability, a healthy supply of seasonal fresh produce throughout the growing season. [The CSA] creates a responsible relationship between people and the food they eat, the land on which it is grown and those who grow it. (More Info on CSA)
A co-operative company is the most direct connection between grower and consumer, in fact it binds the two together in one entity. There are NO wholesalers, NO retailers, NO packaging, NO warehousing, or any of the other costs associated with the distribution of food through normal channels like supermarkets. The consumer end of the co-operative’s distribution system is carried out by members as part of their commitment to the CSA. The grower receives the bulk of the money that the consumers pay for their produce = happy farmer! Happy consumers too – not only do they receive the freshest, most delicious, most nutritious vegetables; they pay a fair price, and they know that their food supply is secure because their farmer is secure.
